The greenhouse effect occurs when heat reflected from earth's surfaces is prevented from escaping into space by gases in the atmosphere.The most two important gases that contribute to this greenhouse effect are water vapor and carbon-dioxide.Both are good absorbers of the terrestrial radiation that is emitted by the earth's surface.The CO2 traps the heat emitted by the surface by not allowing it to escape into space.The water vapor contributes about 36 percent and CO2 about 12 percent to the greenhouse effect.As the content of carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere increases,the greenhouse effect increases leading to global warming.When fossil fuels are burnt,carbon-dioxide is released.Volcanoes and the burning of large regions of tropical forests also produce carob-dioxide.It is estimated that a city of one million people generates 25000 tons of carbon dioxide every day.Thus the content of CO2 is continuously increasing in the atmosphere leading to heating of the earth's surface and the air near it and the average global surface temperature slowly is raising leading to global warming.
